The Real Social Network

It has the power to turn strangers into friends, instantly. Emotions are never filtered. And friendly gestures are not limited to gifs, emojis or any sort of pixels on the screen. Sport is, undisputedly, the real social network. Whether you’re a passionate athlete, a casual player, a dedicated coach or a fan in the stands, sport unites us all in big and small ways.

Sport brings people together. But don’t take our word for it. Have a look at the series of social experiments we conducted, below.

No matter your age, background, ability or skill level, anyone can be involved. Interested in being a part of this social network? It will take a little sweat. Sometimes, a hoarse throat. Start by checking out some of these programmes that we have in store:

ActiveSG is the national movement for sport that offers opportunities for all Singaporeans to experience and share the joy of living better through sport, through a network of sporting spaces and innovative programming.

Under the Sports Facilities Master Plan, Singaporeans of all abilities can access and enjoy quality and affordable innovative sports and recreational facilities which serve sporting needs at the national, regional, town and neighbourhood levels. To find out more or book sports facilities at our ActiveSG sports facilities, click here.

Besides providing spaces for Singaporeans to play and enjoy, ActiveSG also offers various programmes for people with different sporting interests, age groups, fitness levels and abilities to play together and keep fit. For example, Masala Bhangra and KpopX for adults, Flippaball for children, and Yes! I Can Swim and Yes! I Can Play Badminton for persons with disabilities.

Prefer a more structured sports programme to improve your child’s fundamental movement skills or to strive for sporting excellence? The ActiveSG Academies and Clubs have various holistic sports programmes to teach children fundamental movement skills, develop a child’s character and inculcate important life skills such as communication, resilience, discipline and team work.

Sport offers many opportunities to develop our human capital across all segments of society, and showcase our spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy. Sports volunteerism is also part of our national strategy to strengthen communities and people. Two initiatives that serve that purpose are:

Team Nila

Team Nila is a volunteer movement for individuals from all walks of life to give back to the society through various meaningful volunteering opportunities at sporting and non-sporting activities and events. Team Nila volunteers undergo holistic learning and capabilities building workshops to enrich their volunteering experiences.

SportCares

SportCares, the philanthropic arm of Sport Singapore, helps to bridge communities through sports by linking underprivileged beneficiaries (such as underprivileged children, youths-at-risk, seniors and people with disabilities) with passionate volunteers and community-spirited donors. Beneficiaries of the SportCares movement develop good values, gain a sense of purpose, feel reconnected to the society, and get to live better through sport.

Team Singapore is a shared identity for all Singaporeans, where sport is the national language. Team Singapore represents the unique connection between our athletes and our community—young and old—as they embark on a sporting journey as one.

Support our Team Singapore athletes at the 29th SEA Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 19–30 Aug and 17–23 Sep 2017. Subscribe and watch “live” on our YouTube page or send in your well-wishes and messages of support here.
