Courtesy Call on MOS of PMO & MCCY, Sam Tan by Special Advisor to the PM of Japan and Member of the House of Representatives, Taro Kimura

1. Minister of State, Prime Minister's Office & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Mr Sam Tan met with Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan and Member of the House of Representatives, Mr Taro Kimura in Singapore on 4 May 2015.

2. During the meeting, Mr Tan and Mr Kimura reaffirmed the strong bilateral relations between Singapore and Japan. Over the years, there have been many collaborations between the two countries, including in the cultural and youth sectors. At the call on Monday afternoon, discussions included areas such as the strengthening of national identity of citizens in both Singapore and Japan through cultural, sports and community engagement.

3. Mr Kimura also conveyed a signed letter from Japan Prime Minister Shinz┼Ź Abe addressed to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. In his letter, Prime Minister Abe expressed his appreciation for the assistance provided by Singapore in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, including four reconstruction projects. The fourth and largest project, the Rikuzentakata Multi-Purpose Community Hall in Iwate Prefecture, was recently completed in March 2015.

4. Minister of State Sam Tan said, “Over the last few decades, Japan and Singapore have strengthened our relations through multi-faceted collaborations and regular people-to-people exchanges. In 2016, we will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore. We look forward to celebrating that momentous occasion together, and to continue deepening our ties by building on the strong foundation we share.”
