The story of Ilya Katrinnada.

Volunteering allows us to play a part in shaping society into the way we would like it to be.— Ilya Katrinnada, 23, Art Volunteer
As an art student, I thrive on creative expression and channelling that into something that will bring about joy and appreciation. And when I discovered arts volunteerism, I started to think more about how I can use art to help and care for different social groups and beneficiaries.
I’ve always loved working with children, although it can be tiring to match their high levels of energy. But I love their inquisitive minds and willingness to learn and experience, and it always feels good to be guiding and inspiring them in the best ways possible. I’m also particularly passionate about photography and writing, and when I had the opportunity to combine the two, I jumped at it.

The first time I volunteered with children was truly heartening. We organised a trip for some children from underprivileged backgrounds to the Circle Line MRT stations to create art from the various artworks exhibited there. In just one session, I witnessed their enthusiasm and positive reactions towards art, in both creating and appreciating. That encouraged me to keep on volunteering.
There was a particular little girl with delayed development who left an impression on me. I was inspired by her warmth and her increasing excitement when she realised that she was able to express herself freely. It was so good to see her feeling proud of her own work, and this is a great example of how art benefits both its creator and audience.

My biggest achievement was to be able to teach photography to a group of mental health patients. We taught the patients simple photography functions, tips, and how to frame a good shot. The photos were eventually exhibited and printed as souvenirs for all the participants.
I came away from that experience extremely humbled by the patients’ willingness to learn and to try. The greatest fulfilment as an arts volunteer is knowing that I have made a positive contribution to someone’s life. Hopefully, this will inspire others to do the same.

My name is Ilya Katrinnada, and I believe in the transformative power of the arts.— Ilya Katrinnada
