29 June 2026 – This year's 61st National Day celebrations carry special significance as Singapore also marks 60 years since the National Pledge was first recited in schools on 24 August 1966.
Written at a time when Singapore needed to forge a common identity among a group of diverse people, the Pledge gave shape to the values the nation would be built on: multiculturalism, democracy, justice and equality. It reflected a deliberate choice that every community would have a stake in our nation, and that diversity would be a source of our strength, not division.
As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Pledge, we honour not just the words but the generations of Singaporeans who have given them meaning through their choices and actions. We invite all Singaporeans to reflect on what the Pledge asks of us today, to deepen our shared national identity anchored in multiculturalism, and to strengthen our collective commitment to a “We First” society.
As part of the National Day celebrations, Singaporeans can look forward to commemorative activities and understanding more about our Pledge through various programmes (see Annex [PDF, 141.95 KB]). MCCY will also launch a “Pledge60” campaign featuring three short films that capture conversations between everyday Singaporeans reflecting on the Pledge and what it means to them. The accompanying campaign assets will be displayed at selected MRT station platforms, digital screens islandwide, and across major digital platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
Display of the National Flag
In celebration of National Day and the 60th Anniversary of the Pledge, all organisations and households are encouraged to display the National Flag at their offices, building premises, and residential premises during the National Day period, from 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026. During this period, the rules for flying and displaying the National Flag are relaxed – for example, the National Flag may be flown without a flagpole or at night without illumination.
From end-June onwards, members of the public can collect National Flags at no additional cost from partner organisations such as People’s Association Community Clubs, selected CapitaLand malls and selected Courts stores. More details on the collection points will be updated at https://www.ndp.gov.sg/going-beyond/sg-flag-giveaways/.
The National Flag should be treated with respect and used in an appropriate and dignified manner at all times. Any worn-out or damaged flag should not be displayed and should be properly disposed of by packing it into a sealed black trash bag, and not left visible in the dustbins. The full guidelines on the display and use of the Flag can be viewed at https://go.gov.sg/nationalflag.
