4 November 2025 – The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth introduced the Singapore Sports Council (Amendment) Bill for First Reading in Parliament today.
The Bill seeks to amend the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) Act to update the roles and functions of the SSC, more commonly known as Sport Singapore (SportSG). This empowers SportSG to better support Singaporeans’ diverse sporting aspirations and enable Team Singapore athletes to maximise their potential and perform at their highest level.
Key amendments in the Bill will:
Include Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC), besides the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), as one of SportSG’s key partners in organising sports events and competitions, to underscore the Government’s strong and sustained support for disability sports and inclusivity.
Include “mind sports” such as chess and bridge, and “e-sports” within the definition of sports to recognise the growing diversity and aspirations of Singaporeans in our sporting landscape.
Enhance SportSG’s role in promoting physical fitness activities, in addition to sports, to support Singaporeans in adopting physically active lifestyles.
Enable SportSG to establish and maintain codes of practice for coaching and for sports and physical fitness equipment, items and facilities, including accreditation, to uplift standards and support the widespread adoption of best practices in the sports and physical fitness sector.
Empower SportSG to establish institutions to develop and train national athletes and to oversee these institutions’ sports activities and academic curricula. This reflects the Government’s holistic approach to supporting Team Singapore athletes through various stages of their education and sporting careers.
The Government remains committed to building a robust sporting culture that fosters stronger communities, supports healthier living and strengthens our national pride.
