Response to parliamentary question on the follow up on the data incident involving SG Youth Forum participants
*3329. Mr Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik: To ask the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth in respect of the disclosure of about 600 SG Youth Forum participants’ NRIC numbers to a private e-mail address on 25 August 2026 (a) whether the recipient is a known individual or entity; (b) what further steps have been taken to contact the recipient since earlier attempts were unsuccessful; and (c) whether the matter has been referred to the Police.
Response:
A National Youth Council (NYC) staff made an error in typing an email address, resulting in the data being sent to an incorrect email. There is no response despite repeated attempts by NYC to the email to contact and request to delete the information. It is therefore not known if the email is in use, or if it belongs to an individual or entity. As the incident resulted from human error and there was no indication of data misuse, NYC did not make a police report.
On 3 September 2026, NYC emailed all affected participants to notify them of the incident, apologise for the error, and offer to follow up with them on the incident. NYC has counselled the staff involved and strengthened data handling processes.
