Response to parliamentary question on the Government’s assessment of the historical value of the Lee Rubber Godowns

2064. Mr Fadli Fawzi: To ask the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth (a) whether the Preservation of Sites and Monuments division has studied the historical value of the Lee Rubber Godowns; (b) if so, whether there are any plans to conserve the site; and (c) if there are no plans, why does the division not consider the Lee Rubber Godowns to be a site of sufficient significance worthy of study for preservation.

Response:

  1. The National Heritage Board (NHB) has assessed that the site does not have the requisite national importance and historic significance to be considered for preservation as a National Monument.

  2. Notwithstanding, the Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA) has engaged the owner to explore the feasibility of retaining one of the Godowns as a heritage marker in the proposed park. Where physical retention is not possible, agencies will work with the owner and relevant stakeholders to document and commemorate the site’s history.
