Speech by Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Trade and Industry, at the Joint Installation Ceremony of the International Y's Men's Clubs of Singapore (Alpha and Beta Chapters)
Mr David Wong, SMIT1 District Governor, International Y's Men's Clubs
Members from Y's Men's Clubs and YMCAs
Good evening. It is a pleasure for me to be among many of you big-hearted individuals, who believe in volunteerism and service to the community.
As service clubs, the International Y's Men's Clubs of Singapore (Alpha and Beta Chapters) have been making a difference to many around us. Be it providing support for teen pregnancies, journeying with those struggling with Parkinson's disease, or distributing food and provisions to families in need, volunteers like you have changed lives for the better. By stepping forward to help others in your own way, you have shown that everyone can play their part to make a difference to others.
Despite being called a “Men's Club”, your membership includes women members who are enthusiastic and committed in giving back to help others. I'm heartened that a number of younger members will be installed in both clubs as well, to ensure continuity in service.
At the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, we encourage and commend your efforts to bring Singaporeans together for a bigger cause and to promote a strong civic culture.
That is why we are growing SG Cares, a nation-wide movement to amplify the goodwill of Singaporeans, inspire them to step forward, and support them to better help those in need. Your efforts contribute to SG Cares too. Together, we can make Singapore a more caring, compassionate and resilient society. We may be a small nation, but we can have a big heart.
I would like to thank all of you for making the commitment to serve. To the new members of both chapters - all the best in your journey of service. I also wish the Club every success in the decades to come. Have a lovely evening!
