6 August 2015
The Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) today unveiled a special SG50 mural wall at the joint National Day Observance Ceremony (NDOC).
Jubilee Walk will be launched on 29 November 2015 to round up SG50 Celebrations
The Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) today unveiled a special SG50 mural wall at the joint National Day Observance Ceremony (NDOC). The mural, comprising images of staff working at both Ministries, was created in honour of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. The SG50 mural reflects the solidarity and commitment of Singapore’s civil servants. At the ceremony, Minister Lawrence Wong also announced that the Jubilee Walk, a commemorative trail, will be launched on 29 November this year.
The theme for the joint NDOC was “Majulah Singapura”, as both Ministries reflect on the nation’s progress for the past 50 years, pay tribute to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and strive towards creating a better Singapore for Singaporeans.
Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister (MCI) spoke about the impact of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s influence on Singapore and MCI’s work. He said “This year’s National Day Observance Ceremony is a very special one as we celebrate our nation’s 50th birthday. Mr Lee shaped our work in the area of public communications, believing in clear, simple and effective communications, and to write and speak such that the common man in the street can understand you. Mr Lee’s dedication to good communications is a strong reminder not just to the Public Service, but particularly to MCI to better understand the needs of citizens and communicate programmes and policies using a Whole-of-Government perspective. We, at MCI will play our part, together with the rest of our colleagues in the Public Service, to ensure the continued progress and success of our nation for the next 50 years.”
Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister (MCCY) and Second Minister (MCI) said, “There’s much to give thanks for as we celebrate SG50. We only need to look around us in the region to recognise that the arc of history could have moved in another direction, and all of our lives would have turned out very differently. So much of what we have today is due to our founding leaders and pioneers. They made tremendous sacrifices and worked hard for a Singaporean Singapore – a country that does not belong to any single community, but to all of us. They forged a unique path for Singapore – where our different identities are allowed to flourish, and to overlap in a common space which we all share together. So today, we are culturally rooted, with a distinct national identity. We will continue this legacy of our pioneers through our work in MCCY.”
Launch of Jubilee Walk on 29 November 2015
Minister Wong also announced that the Jubilee Walk will be launched on 29 November 2015 with the SG50 Jubilee Big Walk, which is jointly presented by the People’s Association and The New Paper. The Jubilee Walk, which will cover 25 historic and iconic sites in and around the Civic District, will trace the milestones of Singapore’s history and represent Singaporeans’ aspirations for the future. It will also be a lasting physical legacy of Singapore’s Jubilee year.
For the SG50 Jubilee Big Walk in November, participants can expect to start their fun walk from the National Museum of Singapore, continuing on through the Civic District and Marina Bay, and with a finishing-point at Gardens by the Bay.
The NDOC was held at the Old Hill Street Police Station, with more than 500 guests, including key political office holders and staff from both Ministries and their respective Statutory Boards and agencies.
