The Government has allocated a site at Yishun Avenue 3 for the establishment of a new Hindu Temple, following consultations with the Hindu Advisory Board and other community stakeholders. The new temple will be named Sree Guruvayoorappan Ayyappan Temple (SGAT) and will serve the diverse needs and aspirations of the Hindu community.
Background of the temple
The development of SGAT represents a milestone for the Hindu community in Singapore. The last Hindu temple to be built was the Arulmigu Velmurugan Gnanamuneeswarar Temple in Sengkang in 2006.
SGAT’s design will differ from the architectural style of many existing Hindu temples in Singapore, which are often marked by towering gopurams (ornamental entrance towers). It will take inspiration from the traditional Kerala gable, or mukhappu, a design that marries form and function by facilitating natural airflow while maintaining a distinctive aesthetic.
Devotees are able to offer worship to several deities at SGAT, catering to the needs of devotees from different traditions1. The SGAT Annex will also feature a multi-purpose hall and event spaces to host cultural, educational, and social outreach programmes. These facilities will support community-building initiatives like inter-faith collaboration and food distribution.
Projected Timeline of Completion
Construction for SGAT is expected to commence in August/September 2026. During the construction, the temple will work with the relevant authorities to minimise any inconvenience and disamenities caused. The temple will release further details on the expected completion date when ready.
1 Dedicated to the deities Swamy Ayyappan and Sree Guruvayoorappan, the temple complex will also include shrines for Sree Ganapathi and Sree Bhagavathi.
