Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng will be attending the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum at the UN Headquarters in New York City on 1-2 February 2016.
Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth, Mr Baey Yam Keng, will be attending the 2016 United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum. The Forum will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on 1-2 February 2016.
The theme for this year’s ECOSOC Youth Forum is “Youth Taking Action to Implement the 2030 Agenda”. It aims to provide a platform for Member States to engage youths on ways to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs focus on eliminating poverty, inequality, hunger, and improving lives through education and healthcare. Singapore adopted the SDGs on 25 September 2015.
At the first plenary session of the Forum on 1 February 2016, Mr Baey will be speaking on Singapore’s efforts to build stronger community bonds among youths, and help them achieve their aspirations.
As part of the trip, Mr Baey will also meet with overseas Singaporeans who are currently studying or working in New York, as well as local community groups to learn more about their community and youth engagement efforts.
Mr Baey will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
About the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth ForumThe UN ECOSOC Youth Forum is an annual event established in 2012. It is organised by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and the Office of the Youth Envoy of the Secretary General, in collaboration with the United Nations Inter-agency Network on Youth Development. The ECOSOC is one of the main organs of the UN, with a high level of prominence among Member States. The other five organs include the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the International Court of Justice.
The Forum features plenary sessions with representatives from youth organisations, high-level speakers and other keynote speakers. The objective of this upcoming Forum is to bring together youths and member states to establish more concrete plans on implementing the SDGs at the various national and regional levels. There is a focus on youth-led engagement and communication, as well as the different communication strategies young people can use to communicate the SDGs.
The Forum will also be a platform for youths to contribute to the intergovernmental review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Youth delegates will be exposed to and given the opportunity to engage with global policy makers, and network with like-minded youth delegates to learn different engagement strategies for youths by youths.
