Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Mr Sam Tan will be in Los Angeles from 22 to 28 July 2015 to cheer Team Singapore athletes at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games.
The Games, which will be held from 25 July to 2 August 2015, will see more than 170 countries taking part. Singapore will be fielding a contingent of 33 athletes to compete in seven sports – Aquatics (Swimming), Athletics, Badminton, Bocce, Bowling, Football and Table Tennis. This will be the first time that Singapore is taking part in women's Football and Table Tennis at the Games. The contingent will be led by Mrs Linda Prebhash, Honorary Secretary, Special Olympics Singapore.
Mr Tan said: “This is a major sporting event for our special Team Singapore athletes and we are all raring to cheer them on in Los Angeles. I hope this Golden Jubilee year will further spur our athletes on as they give their all to fly the Singapore flag high at the Games.”
While in Los Angeles, Mr Tan will also participate in two key events of the Games. This includes the Host Town program where Team Singapore athletes will visit the town of Pasadena to understand its culture and community. The second is the Special Olympics Social Impact Summit that will showcase community projects from 120 youth leaders from around the world.
At the last Games in 2011, Singapore's contingent of 45 athletes won 12 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals.
Mr Tan will be accompanied by officials from MCCY.
