27 July 2021
Response to parliamentary question on the suggestion made in the House on 8 March 2017 that the President of Singapore issues congratulatory notes to Singapore centenarians on the occasion of their birthdays
Question
Mr Murali Pillai: To ask the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth whether he can provide an update on the suggestion made in the House on 8 March 2017 that the President of Singapore issues congratulatory notes to Singapore centenarians on the occasion of their birthdays.
Response
Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Second Minister for Law & Deputy Chairman of People's Association (PA):
We would like to honour the achievements and contributions of Centenarians in Singapore, and celebrate their longevity. At present, there are various ground-up initiatives which celebrate our Centenarians, such as where Grassroots volunteers visit the Centenarians or their families, and present them with a gift.
We are considering a similar approach at a national level.
MCCY and PA are studying this and will announce details when ready.
