Response to parliamentary question on development plans for mid-sized theatres
Question
Ms Janice Koh: To ask the Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth what are the plans for the development of the two mid-sized theatres originally proposed as part of the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay and how does the Ministry aim to address the rising demand for mid-sized performing venues especially in the central arts district.
Response
Acting Minister Lawrence Wong: The original plans for mid-sized theatres in the Esplanade remain on the table. We are working out the detailed specifications for this project, which will have impact on the costs, the funding model, as well as timing. These are issues which MCCY is presently studying.
In the meantime, the re-opening of Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall, targeted for Aug 2014, will help alleviate the demand for mid-sized performing venues in the city. The theatre will have around 600 seats and the concert hall, around 670 seats.
