In celebration of SG50, Youth Celebrate! is set to be a showcase of the vitality of our youth and their achievements in sports, arts and uniformed groups. Youth Celebrate! also marks the official opening of the Singapore Sports Hub. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be the Guest-of-Honour.
Co-organised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), Youth Celebrate! will be held at the Sports Hub on 26 July 2015 (Sunday). The event will bring together more than 3,700 performers and athletes from all MOE schools, as well as Special Education schools and Institutes of Higher Learning. This is the first time that our new National Stadium is hosting a joint sports and arts event for over 53,000 students, educators and parents.
Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education said: “Youth Celebrate! is one of the biggest events MOE has organised for our students to showcase their diverse talents in sports, arts and mass performances. Students have been training hard together, and are raring to put up a good show for the audience to mark Singapore's golden jubilee. I look forward to an exciting event that demonstrates the teamwork, resilience and vigour of our students.”
Completed in June 2014, the Singapore Sports Hub will celebrate its first year of operations with an Opening Season of events for the community. Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Communications and Information said: “I am excited that the Singapore Sports Hub will be having a two-month Opening Season, starting with the SEA Games in early June, and culminating in Youth Celebrate!. The future of Singapore lies with our youth, and we want to give them every opportunity to turn their dreams into reality. I hope that the Singapore Sports Hub will be a place where our youth shine in their sporting pursuits, break new ground for Singapore, and create shared memories which will bond us as Singaporeans.”
To mark this special milestone, PM Lee will be sealing a Time Capsule that will contain a repository of meaningful items that are symbolic of our nation's sporting aspirations.
Highlights of Youth Celebrate!
Themed 'Celebrating Diverse Talents, Creating Shared Memories and Looking Forward with Confidence', Youth Celebrate! is held on Youth Day this year and includes displays of sport feats, performing arts and choreographed freestyle drills.
Youth Celebrate! will kick off with activities at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, where students will attempt to set two records in the Singapore Book of Records - the largest floating Singapore flag involving 486 swimmers and the most number of laps swum in one hour. There will also be diving and synchronised swimming performances.
At the National Stadium, highlights will include a novelty soccer match 'Goal for a Cause'. Fifty primary school students pit their skills against 11 Singapore former national football players for a charitable cause. The show segment will then come alive with performances by the choir, dance and musical groups that draw inspiration from both traditional and popular cultures. This includes a 250-strong combined uniformed group freestyle drill and a 400-strong combined school display band. For the first time, over 400 student representatives from all schools will display a formation to reveal school logos.
Spectators will form part of the show as they open the Sports Hub with a Kallang Roar and card display, and participate by creating multi-coloured patterns through programmable lightsticks. In the lead up to Youth Celebrate!, students will also be coming together, using social media, to share and celebrate their achievements and the spirit of youths in sports and arts. More details will be released soon.
