Intangible cultural heritage comprises the traditions, rituals, crafts, expressions, knowledge and skills that we practise and pass on from generation to generation. As it is part of our living, everyday heritage, our intangible cultural heritage is dynamic and constantly evolving.
As Singapore's nomination for the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it is important for the chosen intangible cultural heritage element to be one that reflects our multicultural identity as a people, resonates strongly with Singaporeans across all races and social strata, and be able to showcase Singapore's rich and diverse culture on the international stage.
The choice of nominating our Hawker Culture in Singapore for the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage was determined after a series of public engagement efforts with Singaporeans.
When we put our ears to the ground, what we heard have been really heartening. And we’ve done our best to turn ideas into reality, creating ripples across nearly every facet of society. But above all, we’re proud that it’s the work of everyone who calls Singapore home.
