MCYS pays tribute to its volunteers

The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) paid tribute to its volunteers on 18 October 2008 at an appreciation function to honour their good work in helping the Ministry to build a resilient and cohesive society.

1. The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) paid tribute to its volunteers on 18 October 2008 at an appreciation function to honour their good work in helping the Ministry to build a resilient and cohesive society.
2. About 100 awards were presented to the volunteers by Minister (MCYS) Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and Minister of State (MCYS) Mrs Yu- Foo Yee Shoon respectively. More than 1000 guests attended the event, held at the Suntec Singapore.
3. Drawn from the people, private and public sectors, with diverse backgrounds, these volunteers have made a significant difference in the lives of Singaporeans through the selfless giving of their time. In paying tribute to these volunteers, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishan said, ''Every one of you plays a vital role in strengthening our social fabric. In many ways, you are helping to shape a nation of socially responsible individuals and inspired and committed youth. In so doing, you are also helping to build strong and stable families and a caring and active community. I applaud and thank you for your dedicated service.''
4. Special recognitions in the forms of Friends of MCYS and Outstanding Volunteer Awards were given to 10 exemplary volunteers. These 10 recipients volunteered their services in diverse areas ranging from the rehabilitation of young offenders to contributing to the success of specific programmes or projects under MCYS. Among those honoured at the event were 86 volunteers who received their long service awards.and volunteers who were awarded this year's National Day Medals.
5. The annual appreciation function is a gesture by MCYS to thank the volunteers for their dedicated service to the community at large.
